Duplicate order charge guide

What to do when an online purchase is charged twice

Distinguish a temporary card authorization from a completed duplicate charge and prepare matching transaction evidence.

Two entries do not always mean two completed payments. Check whether one is pending, whether there are two order numbers and whether both amounts have fully posted.

Steps to take

  1. 1

Compare the amount, merchant descriptor and transaction dates.

  2. 2

Check whether either entry is pending or only an authorization.

  3. 3

Review the store account for duplicate orders or receipts.

  4. 4

Contact the merchant with both transaction references.

  5. 5

If both charges remain completed and unresolved, ask the payment provider about its dispute route.

Common questions

Why do I see a pending and completed charge?

Some merchants place an authorization before completing payment. The pending entry may disappear, but you should monitor it and ask the merchant or issuer if it remains.

What proves a true duplicate charge?

Two completed charges for the same purchase, supported by matching amounts and merchant details but only one valid order, provide clearer duplicate-billing evidence.
